Below a brief description of remarks, issues, suggestions collected during the first days using the Nokia 770:
PERFORMANCE
Device tends to become slow as more and more applications are opened, up to a point where “insufficient memory ” messages are displayed and the device becomes inoperable ( so it’s a good idea not to leave too many applications open at the same time).
At one occasion, after startup, not a single application would launch.Had to restart the device.
AUDIO/VIDEO FORMATS
Athough quite a number of audio and video standards are supported, I do regret that e.g. ogg-vorbis is not supported (hint for third party application!). Also I struggled to convert e.g. wmv file to avi, real video or mpeg but did not succeed to play converted files on 770. There are of course a lot of parameters to be specify during conversion (bit rate, compression, ..) and it is not clear which of these are supported by 770 (user manual does indeed mention “the video does not necessarily support all the variations of a file format”). So there is clear need for either more specific information on the supported format or even better, a conversion application specifically written for the 770 (hint for 3d party application)
PLAYBACK OF AUDIO/VIDEO ON SMARTPHONE
Although audio/video files on series 60 smartphone are visible and can be transfered to 770, it is NOT possible to play them in “situ” from the smartphone, without transferring them. I understand that bluetooth is too slow to stream video, but it should be fast enough for audio…. On the other hand viewing of pictures, pdf files can be done directly from the smartphone without transfering them first to 770.
INSTALLING APPLICATIONS
User manual mentions that the application installer is “intended for software installers only”. This is strange for an open source based platform which should foster a host of third party applications. And already there are quite a few applications available now, e.g. word processor, PIM suite, document reader,… which could be interesting for users! So, instructions how to install applications should be included in the user manual. Luckily more information is available in the device help. I miss the point here!
DESK STAND DT-7
Two weird bits of plastic come with the package. One can figure out they must have to do with the desktop stand which is mentioned as being part of the package. However nowhere is there any reference to be found on this (not on Nokia site, not in user manual), let alone instructions on how to put this together… So I was puzzled what to do with this…Luckily my wife figured out that the 2 pieces just have to be hooked one onto the other to produce a cute desk stand. It takes a logical mind to figure this out…
GPE-CONTACTS (third party application)
When creating a contact and picking a birthday date from calendar view, calendar view gets stuck (remains displayed, even when switching to other application).
To be continued.
